When I was a kid right up through adulthood, Christmas Eve was spent with my grandfather's side of the family. Without a lengthy family tree explanation, let's just say that it was a Brady Bunch mash up of family fun.
There were lots of kids, of which I tended to be the oldest present most years. We were usually relegated to the kids' table, kids' corner, or even a kids' room.
Food was a plenty. Ham, turkey, scalloped potatoes, jello salads, ambrosia salad, salmon, just dishes and dishes of food. And all the condiments to go with it, including Grandma & Grandpa's sweet pickles and plenty of black olives.
To this day, I don't know if anyone actually
ate the black olives. Except of course, for me. But as the oldest kid, I not only ate the olives, I took special privilege in passing on the tradition of
how a kid should eat black olives. It is something to be mastered by small hands, something most adults (with adult sized hands) are not able to participate in without breaking them.
It's a tough responsibility to make sure the children of a family learn the holiday traditions properly. But somebody has to do it.

I can appreciate the trick but not the olives themselves.
I used to enjoy putting Salerno butter cookies on all 10 fingers as a child!
LOVE black olives but I never thought of serving them up like that. And? It's something I would do. I love your "kid" side, Ally. And I'm not kiddin!
LOL
I gotta put those on my grocery list for this week. Cravings...
Not a black olive fan myself, but way to be a good older kid to help pass on the tradition. :)
Now, a friend of mine posted this on her blog a few months ago, and it still makes me giggle whenever I think about it. Check it out!
Very important. Good thing they have you to pass this on the right way. :0) We did this as kids too!
Would you think me weird if I said I wanted to suck on your fingers?...actually, you're good, I'm not pregnant. But during my first pregnancies, I sent my husband out in the middle of the night in search of olives. I think it's a great tradition to be passed on.
